Training Topics Include

Mental health

Postpartum doulas are not perinatal mental health experts (unless you are!), but we are in a position to truly be world changers here. By understanding some basics of perinatal mental health, you may recognize changes or warning signs in your clients. You can be a bridge to further care. And that can mean a world of difference!

Attachment

What is infant attachment, attachment styles, and why do they matter? We will work through these ideas and how you as a postpartum doula can support secure infant attachment.

infant sleep

The dream of new parents, the topic of so many authors, one of the greatest postpartum challenges, and just one of the areas you’ll be prepared to support. The resources in this section will help you to have a better understanding of infant development and how we can help our clients get a little more needed sleep. Sleep will help our clients heal physically and emotionally, and be better able to care for their babies.

the hard stuff

We’ll explore some of the pressures new parents feel and we dive into some of our ideas about parenting, crying, do some myth debunking, and checkout what we really know. Who knew the hardest things could actually be so much better with a postpartum doula? We did.

infant feeding

However your clients feed their baby, you will be prepared to support them and help them have a positive feeding journey. Your trainer is an IBCLC and you received the award winning lactation class Prepared Feeding a part of your registration.

business development

You will leave training ready to launch your business or grow your existing one. Topics included are marketing, web development and seo, community, and understanding your audience. At best we practice an abundance model, so be ready for growth!

all families

There is no one way a family is made and no one way to support a family. We will explore racial implications, gender, sexuality, income diversity, family background, and intersectionality as factors that impact the postpartum period and how we care for our clients.

Training was phenomenal! Thanks for creating such a wonderful program!

Answers to your questions!

Where do I need to be located for training? You can join us from anywhere! You do NOT have to attend training in the state where you plan to practice. Pick a date or city that works for your schedule and join us in-person or online. Our certification is recognized in all 50 states and globally.

Does your course cover lactation? Yes, we cover infant feeding and lactation in great detail. The class is taught by Amanda Devereux, an IBCLC, and your receive the class Prepared Feeding, a comprehensive lactation course at the time of registration.

What is the investment for the course? Our $699 registration fee covers your full training experience (excluding required books and your food handler’s course). At BEST, we believe in transparency: there are no hidden packets or ongoing membership fees. We also proudly offer scholarships—ask us for details!

Do you offer payment plans? Yes! We make it easy to invest in your future. Simply make a deposit when you register, and you’ll receive a link to pay the balance at your own pace. As long as your balance is cleared one week before your training date, you’re good to go!

What are the required readings? You can find our curated list of awesome books along with more details on everything included in your registration.

I’m traveling for the workshop—where should I stay? We love our traveling students! To make things easy, we choose locations near accessible lodging, food, and amenities (including fridge space for food and human milk storage). In some locations, you can even join Amanda and Maria for a "Birth Pro-Sleepover" to save on a commute and spend extra time with your new BESTies.

I’ve already trained elsewhere. Is BEST worth it? Absolutely. Many experienced doulas choose BEST because our workshops are unique in both content and community. If you’ve already taken a postpartum training, we offer a cross-training path that honors your existing knowledge while welcoming you into the BEST family. Read more about cross-training here.

How does recertification work? Recertification happens every two years and is designed to be straightforward and user-friendly. The fee is discounted (and can even be free!) if you refer others and grow our birth community. We don't believe in needless busy work.
